According to the USCG navigational rules, various configurations indicate specific conditions: at anchor, a single round ball; aground, three round balls in a vertical line; making way with sails up and motor on, an inverted cone (required for sailboats 12 meters or larger); dredging or making way with an obstruction, two green lights or two diamonds in a vertical line for the safe side to pass, and two red lights or two circles in a vertical line for the obstructed side; vessel not under command, two round balls in a straight line; vessel restrained by draft, a cylinder; vessel restricted in maneuverability, three shapes in a straight line with a ball on top, a diamond in the middle, and a ball on the bottom; and vessel engaged in fishing, two cones in a vertical line with their apexes pointed at the center.
