The Sentry water cable barrier is an NCHRP 350 TL-3 certified work zone crash barrier designed to serve as an alternative to heavy concrete barriers in construction zones. Each barrier features eleven interlocking knuckles on each end, allowing multiple units to be connected using a 1" (30 mm) diameter galvanized hollow steel T-pin secured with a steel keeper pin at the bottom. Molded within each Sentry are four (4) 0.375" (9.5 mm) diameter stranded steel cables that are galvanized for superior corrosion resistance, which effectively prevent the impacting vehicle from penetrating the barrier wall, ensuring protection for the work zone and surrounding traffic. The Sentry barrier has been tested and accepted for TL-2 and TL-3 lightweight impacts of 1,807 lbs (820 kg) and heavy impacts of 4,409 lbs (2,000 kg) at speeds of 45 mph (70 kph) and 62.5 mph (100 kph). The empty weight of the barrier is 160 lbs (73 kg) and it weighs 2,000 lbs (907 kg) when filled with 220 gallons (832 liters) of water. The dimensions of the Sentry are 72 in (183 cm) in length, 43 in (109 cm) in height, and 22 in (57 cm) in width. The integration of molded corrosion-resistant steel cables allows for a free-standing, continuous longitudinal barrier. Storage and transport are facilitated by stacking lugs on the top and bottom, while forklift through holes and pallet jack slots ensure easy movement. The interlocking knuckle design provides a secure connection between sections while allowing for up to a 15-degree rotation. An 8-inch (20.32 cm) diameter fill hole allows for rapid filling, and a tamper-resistant drain plug with coarse buttress thread is included for secure water retention.
