The Zircon Multiscanner® M40 handheld electronic metal detector is designed for quick and easy detection of metal in various non-metallic surfaces such as wood, drywall, paneling, tile, stucco, plaster, and concrete. It effectively locates ferrous (magnetic) metal up to 4 inches (10 cm) deep and non-ferrous (non-magnetic) metal up to 2 inches (5 cm) deep. The M40 is particularly useful for identifying studs in lath and plaster walls that lack metal mesh by detecting the pattern of nails attaching the wood lath to the studs. This device can find plumbing, ductwork, rebar, nails, and screws within walls, floors, and ceilings, making it ideal for scanning reclaimed lumber for hidden metal. The M40 features two scanning positions: a pinpoint scan for locating small objects such as screws and nails, and a wide scan for detecting metal in walls or concrete. The device also includes LED arrays that indicate signal strength, with red LEDs lighting up progressively as it approaches a metal object, and a top lighted blue coil along with an audio tone to signal when a metal target is located.
