FEP rods and sheets are made from fluorinated ethylene propylene, a relatively soft thermoplastic known for its chemical inertness and low dielectric constant across a broad frequency range. Although FEP has lower tensile strength, wear resistance, and creep resistance compared to many other engineering plastics, it offers a high degree of stress crack resistance and a low coefficient of friction. This material is recognized for its exceptional dielectric properties and heat resistance, retaining useful properties even after service at temperatures up to 400°F (204°C) and down to -454°F (-270°C). FEP meets the FDA compliance standard of 21 CFR 177.1550 and features high transparency with good transmittance of ultraviolet and visible wavelengths. Additionally, it boasts the lowest refractive index of all thermoplastics, exhibiting low light reflection comparable to that of water.
