Kimble® KIMAX® pycnometers are designed for measuring and comparing the densities or specific gravities of liquids and solids. The 15123N series thermometers are non-mercury, spirit-filled, featuring a standard taper 10/18 thermometer with a range of 14 to 38 degrees C in 0.2 degree increments and are retested for accuracy within ± 0.2 degrees C. The standard taper 5/12 side tube cap includes a small vent near the top, while the conical body design ensures maximum stability. The capacity is within 10 percent of the nominal shown on the flask, and each flask body is uniquely numbered for easy identification. The 50ml size is suitable for determining the specific gravity of pigments (ASTM D153) and is manufactured from 33 expansion, low extractable borosilicate glass that meets USP Type I and ASTM E438, Type I, Class A requirements. For usage, the procedure involves thoroughly cleaning, drying, assembling, and weighing the empty pycnometer, filling it with recently boiled distilled water, and inserting the thermometer to manage temperature and overflow. After reaching the desired temperature in a constant temperature bath, the pycnometer is reweighed, and the weight difference helps calculate the specific gravity using the formula: specific gravity = (weight of liquid of unknown S.G / weight of water at the same temperature). Caution is advised when handling this product, as some items may contain mercury, which can evaporate and pose health risks. Proper disposal as hazardous waste is required according to state and local laws.
