Product Details
Kimble® Kimax® pycnometers are specifically designed for measuring and comparing the densities or specific gravities of liquids and solids. The 15123N series thermometers are non-mercury spirit-filled and come with a standard taper 10/18 thermometer that has a temperature range of 14 to 38 degrees C, with increments of 0.2 degrees. The thermometer is retested for accuracy within ± 0.2 degrees C. Each pycnometer features a standard taper 5/12 side tube cap with a vent near the top and a conical body for enhanced stability. The capacity is within 10 percent of the nominal values indicated on the flask, which is individually numbered for easy identification. The 50ml size is suitable for determining the specific gravity of pigments in accordance with ASTM D153 and is manufactured from 33 expansion, low extractable borosilicate glass that conforms to USP Type I and ASTM E438, Type I, Class A standards. For utilizing the 15123R and 15123N bottles, the procedure involves cleaning, drying, assembling, and weighing the empty pycnometer, then filling it with recently boiled distilled water at a temperature slightly below the desired determination temperature. The thermometer is inserted to allow water to flow through the overflow tube, and after placing the assembly in a constant temperature bath, the excess water is wiped off before reweighing and recording. The weight difference provides the volume of water in the flask, which can be used to calculate the specific gravity of an unknown liquid by comparing it with the weight of water at the same temperature. It is important to note that some of these items may contain mercury, which can evaporate into a toxic vapor; therefore, caution is advised in handling and storing these products. Mercury-containing items must be recycled or disposed of as hazardous waste in accordance with local regulations.
