The polyethylene sample splitter offers an efficient method for preparing subsamples of collected water-sediment mixtures from stream flows for water quality analysis. The kit includes a thick-walled cylindrical vessel with a disc churn, allowing water sediment samples to be poured into the splitter, where they are composited into one representative cross-section sample of the stream flow. This composite can then be split into four to sixteen representative subsamples. The sample splitter features a center handle that extends through the cover, with a locating notch to maintain orientation, and a small polypropylene spring-loaded spigot for draining subsamples into bottles for delivery to the water quality laboratory. It is designed with a carrying handle for easy transport, whether full or empty, and is intended to meet USGS water sampling protocol. Both the lid and spigot are replaceable, enhancing the longevity and usability of the product.
