The No. 498 low carbon ground flat stock is a premium free machining steel, known for its exceptional machinability, boasting a rating of 137 compared to the standard AISI 1018 steel which has a machinability rating of 100. This advanced material offers longer cutting tool life, superior finish quality, faster production rates, and reduced machining costs. It provides substantial cost savings of up to 60 percent over tool steel ground flat stock due to its low carbon composition, and is available in 24" lengths, allowing for one-third more steel at a lower cost. This stock is ideally suited for a variety of applications, such as stripper plates, jigs, fixtures, machine and component parts, and templates, which do not necessitate the use of more expensive heat-treated steels. Additionally, this free machining steel can be carburized or case hardened, leading to significant improvements in its physical properties, particularly in tensile strength, yield point, and Brinell hardness after hardening. The material thickness of 1/8" and under is composed of AISI 1010 material.
