W-1 tool steel is a general-purpose water-hardening tool steel characterized by a 1.00% carbon content, providing an excellent combination of physical properties. It features an outer case that exhibits abrasion resistance in the 60 Rockwell "C" range, complemented by a soft, ductile inner core. With a machinability rating of 100, W-1 is regarded as the easiest of all steels to machine, serving as a basis for comparison with other tool steels.
