A-2 tool steel is a general-purpose, 5% chrome air hardening tool steel, recognized for its superior wear resistance compared to S-7, A-6, and A-8 tool steels, as well as its toughness and ductility, which exceed those of D-2 tool steel. This grade of tool steel is considered safe to harden and can be heat treated in most tool room furnaces without complications. In terms of machinability, A-2 tool steel has a rating of 65 when compared to a 1% carbon steel.
