W-1 tool steel is a general-purpose water-hardening tool steel featuring a carbon content of 1.00%. It provides an excellent combination of physical properties, characterized by an outer case that is abrasion resistant, achieving a hardness in the 60 Rockwell "C" range, while maintaining a soft, ductile inner core. The machinability rating of W-1 is 100, making it the easiest of all steels to machine, serving as a basis for comparison with other tool steels.
