The 3M™ Flap Disc 577F Giant is a 4-1/2" diameter, 5/8-11 T29 type flap disc made with alumina zirconia abrasive and a grit size of 36. Designed for tough grinding applications where the final finish is important, its overlapping flaps continually wear away to expose fresh abrasive mineral for a fast, consistent cut, while cushioning the flaps creates a blended finish. This flap disc includes a grinding aid that reduces grinding temperatures, making it suitable for heat-sensitive alloys such as stainless steel, nickel alloys, and titanium. The giant size features the same diameter as standard flap discs but with wider flaps that create extra-thick layers containing 25% more abrasive material, providing a more aggressive cut and longer life. Flap discs are three-dimensional grinding discs consisting of overlapping, abrasive-coated, fiber-reinforced flaps that fan out from a central hub, offering a one-step alternative to bonded wheels and fiber discs by grinding and finishing in a single step. Under normal conditions, they generate a finish one grade finer than a fiber disc of the same grit and last longer due to increased abrasive material. The flexible flaps follow curves and contours easily, reduce gouging, and enhance operator comfort. The 3M™ flap disc is ideal for applications including blending, deburring, edge beveling, finishing, polishing, right angle grinding, and metal fabrication.
