The 3M™ flap wheel type 83 747D measures 2-1/2" x 1" x 1/4" and features 80 grit mixed ceramic abrasive. Each flap is covered with a proprietary ceramic abrasive mix combining aluminum oxide with 3M ceramic grain, designed to enhance toughness, hardness, and durability for longer-lasting abrasive performance. This ceramic/aluminum oxide blend surpasses standard aluminum oxide abrasives in cut rate and durability, making it suitable for light to moderate stock removal and surface preparation. The abrasive mix is bonded to an X-weight cotton backing using a resin bond that resists thermal and chemical deterioration during high-speed sanding. The hard resin bond allows for faster cuts and higher cut rates, while the inclusion of a grinding aid provides cooler running on stainless steel. The flexible cotton backing bends to fit the workpiece, and as the wheel wears, self-cutting flaps expose fresh abrasive material to ensure consistent sanding throughout its life. These coated abrasive flap wheels are ideal for light grinding, blending, graining, and scale removal on various metals, with applications including blending, descaling, refining, and setting the grain. The wheels are available in flange mounted and spindle mounted constructions, and are commonly used in metal fabrication industries.
