FEP rods and sheets are made from fluorinated ethylene propylene, a relatively soft thermoplastic known for its chemical inertness and low dielectric constant across a wide frequency range. Although FEP has lower tensile strength, wear resistance, and creep resistance compared to other engineering plastics, it exhibits a very high degree of stress crack resistance and a low coefficient of friction. FEP maintains exceptional dielectric properties and heat resistance, retaining its useful properties after service at temperatures up to 400°F (204°C) and even at -454°F (-270°C). It complies with FDA 21 CFR 177.1550, ensuring safety for food-related applications. Additionally, FEP's high transparency allows for good transmittance of ultraviolet and visible wavelengths, while its low refractive index, equal to that of water, results in minimal light reflection.
