FEP rods and sheets are produced from fluorinated ethylene propylene, a relatively soft thermoplastic known for its chemical inertness and low dielectric constant across a wide frequency range. While FEP has lower tensile strength, wear resistance, and creep resistance compared to many other engineering plastics, it features a high degree of stress crack resistance and a low coefficient of friction. The material exhibits exceptional dielectric properties, heat resistance, and retains its characteristics after service at temperatures up to 400°F (204°C), with useful properties extending down to -454°F (-270°C). FEP also meets FDA 21 CFR 177.1550 compliance standards. Additionally, it boasts high transparency, allowing for good transmittance of ultraviolet and visible wavelengths, and has the lowest refractive index among thermoplastics, resulting in low light reflection akin to that of water.
