FEP rods and sheets are made from fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP), a relatively soft thermoplastic that exhibits lower tensile strength, wear resistance, and creep resistance compared to many other engineering plastics. Despite these characteristics, FEP is chemically inert, possessing a low dielectric constant across a wide frequency range. It offers a very high degree of stress crack resistance and a low coefficient of friction, along with exceptional dielectric properties and heat resistance. FEP retains its properties even after service at temperatures up to 400°F (204°C) and maintains useful characteristics at extreme low temperatures of -454°F (-270°C). Additionally, it complies with FDA 21 CFR 177.1550 standards, providing assurance for food contact applications. The material also features high transparency, allowing for good transmittance of ultraviolet and visible wavelengths, and has the lowest refractive index among all thermoplastics with minimal light reflection, comparable to that of water.
