FEP rods and sheets are made from fluorinated ethylene propylene, a relatively soft thermoplastic known for its chemical inertness and low dielectric constant across a wide frequency range. Though it has lower tensile strength, wear resistance, and creep resistance compared to many other engineering plastics, FEP features a very high degree of stress crack resistance and a low coefficient of friction. It possesses exceptional dielectric properties and heat resistance, retaining useful characteristics after service at temperatures up to 400°F (204°C) and as low as -454°F (-270°C). FEP is compliant with FDA 21 CFR 177.1550, ensuring safety for various applications. Additionally, it offers high transparency with good transmittance of ultraviolet and visible wavelengths, along with the lowest refractive index among all thermoplastics, resulting in low light reflection comparable to that of water.
