FEP rods and sheets are made from fluorinated ethylene propylene, a relatively soft thermoplastic known for its chemical inertness and low dielectric constant across a wide frequency range. While it exhibits lower tensile strength, wear resistance, and creep resistance compared to many other engineering plastics, FEP stands out due to its very high degree of stress crack resistance and low coefficient of friction. It offers exceptional dielectric properties and heat resistance, retaining useful properties after service at temperatures up to 400°F (204°C) and maintaining functionality even at -454°F (-270°C). Additionally, FEP complies with FDA 21 CFR 177.1550 and features high transparency with good transmittance of ultraviolet and visible wavelengths. It possesses the lowest refractive index of all thermoplastics, resulting in low light reflection similar to that of water.
