UHMw polyethylene film is known for its exceptionally high abrasion resistance, which surpasses that of steel, making it suitable for severe service applications. It features broad chemical resistance and a low coefficient of friction, ensuring its versatility in various engineering contexts. This material is slippery like Teflon® fluoropolymer while offering superior abrasion and wear resistance. The molecular weight of UHMW polymers is approximately 10 times that of conventional high-density polyethylene resins, contributing to their unique characteristics. Applications include inner and outer surfaces for potable water, chemical, fuel, and hydraulic hoses; bottom surfaces for skis and snowboards; and linings for chutes to reduce friction and wear. Additionally, UHMW is available with an adhesive option, as seen in UHMW pressure-sensitive tape.
