UHMw polyethylene film exhibits exceptionally high abrasion resistance, surpassing that of steel, and is complemented by broad chemical resistance and a low coefficient of friction, making it an extremely adaptable engineering material for a range of severe service applications. With a slickness comparable to Teflon fluoropolymer but superior abrasion and wear resistance, UHMW polymers possess a molecular weight average ten times that of standard high-density polyethylene resins. This elevated molecular weight is responsible for UHMW's distinct combination of beneficial characteristics. Typical applications include use as inner and outer surfaces for potable water, chemical, fuel, and hydraulic hoses; bottom surfaces for skis and snowboards; linings for chutes to reduce friction and wear; and automotive weather stripping. Additionally, UHMW is available with adhesive backing in the form of UHMW pressure sensitive tape.
