Nomex® aramid paper sheets and tubes, produced by DuPont, are high-temperature resistant insulation products that provide an excellent balance of physical and electrical properties. Nomex is constructed entirely from synthetic aramid polymer in two forms: short fibers (floc) and microscopic fibrous binder particles (fibrids). It has been widely adopted for use as electrical insulation in liquid and dry transformers, motors, and generators. Nomex Type 410 is a calendered insulation paper known for its high inherent dielectric strength, mechanical toughness, flexibility, and resilience, and is available in 11 thicknesses ranging from 2 to 30 mils (0.05 to 0.76 mm). This type maintains a dielectric strength of 300 V/mil (12 kV/mm) for several hours at temperatures of 400°C (750°F). Nomex Type 411, which is uncalendered, is available in thicknesses from 0.13 mm to 0.58 mm and is often selected for applications requiring soft cushioning or where conformability and impregnability are significant. Other available types include Nomex® Type 414, Type 418, Nomex® pressboard, T992, T993, and T994.
