The kit utilizes a locking ring that secures sterile velveteen squares onto a PVC cylinder, allowing for easy control of the plating device. To produce replicas, a petri dish carrying microbial colonies is inverted and lowered onto the cloth surface, then lifted. A fresh sterile nutrient plate is subsequently lowered onto the velveteen surface and lifted, leaving a replica of the original colonies in the new dish. The device may be disinfected between uses with a brief rinse in 70% ethanol or chlorine bleach. The aluminum ring has a diameter of 10.2 cm (4 inches) and the PVC cylinder stands 6.9 cm (2 inches) high, suitable for use with 90 to 100 mm petri dishes. The kit includes 12 white velveteen squares, with replacement velveteen squares available in white (H37848-0001) or black (H37848-0002). The device is not autoclavable.
