The 3M™ flap disc 577F measures 7" in diameter with a 5/8-11 T27 arbor and features alumina zirconia abrasive material with an 80 grit size. It is designed for tough grinding applications where a high-quality final finish is important, using overlapping layers of abrasive-coated, fiber-reinforced flaps that continually wear to expose fresh abrasive mineral for a consistent, fast cut. The cushioning effect of the flaps produces a blended finish, typically achieving a finish one grade finer than the disc's grit, thereby reducing finishing steps. The disc includes a grinding aid to reduce grinding temperatures, making it suitable for heat-sensitive alloys such as stainless steel, nickel alloys, and titanium. It is intended for use on right angle grinders, with a giant size version providing wider flaps that contain 25% more abrasive material than standard flap discs for more aggressive cutting and longer life. The flap disc serves as a one-step alternative to bonded wheels and fiber discs, grinding and finishing simultaneously, which saves time and cost. Its overlapping construction allows loading of more abrasive material, enabling longer lifespan, enhanced flexibility to follow curves and contours with less gouging, and improved operator comfort. Suitable applications include weld grinding, deburring, rust removal, edge grinding, weld seam blending, blending, edge beveling, finishing, polishing, and metal fabrication.
