The 3M™ flap disc 577F measures 7 inches in diameter with a 5/8-11 arbor and features T29 alumina zirconia abrasive with 40 grit, designed for tough grinding applications where the final finish is important. Its overlapping layers of abrasive-coated, fiber-reinforced flaps wear away continually to expose fresh abrasive mineral, providing a fast and consistent cut while cushioning the flaps to create a blended finish that typically results in a finish one grade finer than the flap disc's grit. The disc includes a grinding aid that reduces grinding temperatures, making it suitable for heat-sensitive alloys such as stainless steel, nickel alloys, and titanium. Intended for use on a right angle grinder, the giant size flap disc has the same diameter as standard discs but with wider flaps, containing 25% more abrasive material for a more aggressive cut and longer life. The flap discs serve as a one-step alternative to bonded wheels and fiber discs by grinding and finishing in a single step, generating less gouging, increasing operator comfort, and following curves and contours effectively. Typical applications include weld grinding, deburring, rust removal, edge grinding, weld seam blending, blending, edge beveling, finishing, polishing, and right angle grinding in metal fabrication.
