The 3M™ Flap Disc 577F measures 7" in diameter with a 7/8" arbor and features a T29 backing, using alumina zirconia as the abrasive mineral in a 40 grit size. It is designed for tough grinding applications where the final finish is important, utilizing overlapping layers of abrasive-coated, fiber-reinforced flaps that continually wear away to expose fresh abrasive for a fast, consistent cut. The flap disc includes a grinding aid to reduce grinding temperatures, making it suitable for heat-sensitive alloys such as stainless steel, nickel alloys, and titanium. It is intended for use on a right angle grinder and is classified as a "giant size" flap disc, with the same diameter as standard discs but wider flaps that create thicker layers and contain 25% more abrasive material for a more aggressive cut and longer life. The flap disc serves as a one-step alternative to bonded wheels and fiber discs by grinding and finishing in a single step, generating a finish one grade finer than fiber discs of the same grit while outlasting typical discs due to the increased abrasive load. Its flexibility allows it to follow curves and contours easily with less gouging, enhancing operator comfort. Typical applications include weld grinding, deburring, rust removal, edge grinding, weld seam blending, blending, edge beveling, finishing, polishing, and general metal fabrication.
