The 3M™ Disc Pad Face Plate is designed to back a same-size fiber disc (sold separately), providing firm support and the necessary force for various grinding applications. It requires a disc pad hub (sold separately) for attachment to the power tool and is secured in place with a retainer nut (sold separately). This setup allows for easy face plate changes without removing the hub, enabling use in multiple applications from heavy grinding to finishing. Some face plates feature ribbing on the bottom, which enhances force for optimal abrasive mineral fracturing by increasing grinding pressure while extending disc life. Users can select a plate based on the required firmness: lighter density for lighter grinding tasks and harder density for heavier applications. The face plates are color-coded to indicate density, with red for extra hard (heavy grinding), black for hard (heavy metal removal), gray for medium (general purpose), and white for soft (finishing on flat or contoured surfaces).
