The 3M™ cloth belt 577F measures 1/4" x 18" and features alumina zirconia abrasive grain, which offers increased cutting efficiency compared to aluminum oxide belts. It is backed with a heavy, water-resistant polyester backing that withstands high-pressure applications and edge work, supporting both wet and dry operations. This belt is recommended for aluminum, mild steel, stainless steel, and other exotic metal alloys, suitable for dimensioning parts, deburring, blending, and finishing castings and forgings. To protect heat-sensitive alloys such as stainless steel, nickel alloys, and cobalt alloys, a grinding aid on the belt reduces running temperatures. The abrasive is resin-bonded to the backing to maintain durability under high heat and pressure. Alumina zirconia fractures frequently, continually producing sharp points and delivering faster cut rates than aluminum oxide, making it ideal for heavy stock removal and high-pressure grinding. Abrasive belts come in various widths and lengths to fit different belt sanding tools across multiple metalworking applications. Wider belts are used on wide belt sanders for flat finishing and smoothing rough edges or adding grain patterns to stainless steel sheets, medium-width belts for weld removal or finishing sheets and coils on backstands or feed-thru flat finishers, and narrow belts for grinding, finishing, or accessing right-angle corners on file tools.
