The 3M™ cloth belt 577F measures 1/2" x 24" and features alumina zirconium 80 grit abrasive grain, designed for increased cutting efficiency compared to aluminum oxide belts. It has a heavy, water-resistant polyester backing that withstands high-pressure applications and edge work, supporting both wet and dry operations while ensuring long life. This belt is recommended for use on aluminum, mild steel, stainless steel, and other exotic metal alloys for dimensioning parts, deburring, blending, and finishing castings and forgings. It includes a grinding aid that reduces running temperatures to protect heat-sensitive alloys such as stainless steel, nickel alloys, and cobalt alloys. The abrasive is resin-bonded to the backing to maintain durability under high heat and pressure. Alumina zirconium abrasive fractures frequently to produce sharp points, enabling faster cut rates than aluminum oxide and is developed for heavy stock removal and high-pressure grinding. The belts come in various widths and lengths to fit different belt sanding tools for metalworking applications, including wide belts for flat finishing and grain patterns on metal sheets, medium-width belts for weld removal and finishing on backstands or feed-thru flat finishers, and narrow belts used on backstands or file tools for finishing right-angle corners.
