The 3M™ cloth belt 577F measures 1/4" x 24" and features alumina zirconium abrasive grain, which provides increased cutting efficiency compared to aluminum oxide belts. It is backed with a heavy, water-resistant polyester backing that endures high-pressure applications and edge work, supporting both wet and dry operations. The belt is recommended for use on aluminum, mild steel, stainless steel, and exotic metal alloys for dimensioning parts, deburring, blending, and finishing castings and forgings. A grinding aid on the belt reduces running temperatures to protect heat-sensitive alloys such as stainless steel, nickel, and cobalt alloys. The abrasive is resin-bonded to the backing to maintain durability under high heat and pressure. Alumina zirconia frequently fractures to produce sharp points for faster cutting and was developed for heavy stock removal and high-pressure grinding. Abrasive belts are available in various widths and lengths, suitable for different belt sanding tools across metalworking applications. Wider belts are used on wide belt sanders for flat finishing and smoothing metal sheet edges, medium-width belts are typically used on backstands for weld removal or feed-thru flat finishers, and narrow belts are used on backstands or file tools to reach right-angle corners.
