The 3M™ cloth belt 577F measures 2" x 60" and features 40 grit alumina zirconium abrasive, recommended for use on aluminum, mild steel, stainless steel, and other exotic metal alloys for dimensioning parts, deburring, blending, and finishing castings and forgings. The belt includes a grinding aid to reduce running temperatures, protecting heat-sensitive alloys such as stainless steel, nickel alloys, and cobalt alloys. The abrasive is firmly bonded to the backing with resin to ensure durability under high heat and pressure. Alumina zirconia, a synthetic mineral, fractures frequently to produce sharp points for faster cut rates compared to aluminum oxide and is developed for heavy stock removal and high-pressure grinding. The abrasive belts are available in various widths and lengths to fit a wide range of belt sanding tools across multiple metalworking applications. Wide belts are suited for wide belt sanders used in flat finishing to smooth rough cut edges or add grain patterns to metal sheets, while medium-width belts are typically used on backstands or feed-thru flat finishers for welding removal or finishing sheets and coils. Narrow belts are used on backstands for grinding and finishing or on file tools to reach right-angle corners. Suitable applications include centerless and cylindrical grinding, descaling, finishing, flat finishing, gate removal, high-pressure grinding, intermediate finishing, mill scale removal, parting line removal, plate grinding, shaping, and sheet grinding.
