The 3M™ cloth belt 577F measures 2" x 60" and features 60 grit alumina zirconium abrasive, designed for use on aluminum, mild steel, stainless steel, and other exotic metal alloys for dimensioning parts, deburring, blending, and finishing castings and forgings. A grinding aid on the belt reduces running temperatures, protecting heat-sensitive alloys such as stainless steel, nickel alloys, and cobalt alloys. The abrasive is resin-bonded to the backing for durability under high heat and pressure. Alumina zirconia, a synthetic mineral, fractures frequently to continually produce sharp points, delivering a faster cut rate than aluminum oxide, and is developed for heavy stock removal and high-pressure grinding. The belts are available in various widths and lengths to fit different industrial belt sanders; wider belts are used for flat finishing and smoothing edges of metal sheets, medium-width belts are typically used on backstands or feed-thru flat finishers for finishing sheets or coils, and narrow belts are used on backstands or file tools for finishing right-angle corners. Typical applications include centerless and cylindrical grinding, descaling, flat finishing, gate removal, high pressure grinding, intermediate finishing, mill scale removal, parting line removal, plate grinding, shaping, and sheet grinding.
