The 3M™ cloth belt 577F measures 2" x 60" and features 80 grit alumina zirconium abrasive, designed for use on aluminum, mild steel, stainless steel, and other exotic metal alloys in applications such as dimensioning parts, deburring, blending, and finishing castings and forgings. The belt includes a grinding aid to reduce running temperatures, protecting heat-sensitive alloys like stainless steel, nickel alloys, and cobalt alloys. The abrasive is resin-bonded to a durable cloth backing to withstand high heat and pressure. Alumina zirconia, a synthetic mineral formulated for heavy stock removal and high-pressure grinding, fractures frequently to maintain sharp points and deliver a faster cut rate than aluminum oxide. These abrasive belts are available in various widths and lengths, compatible with a range of belt sanding tools. Wider belts are used with wide belt sanders for flat finishing and smoothing rough cut metal edges or adding grain patterns to stainless steel sheets; medium-width belts are typically used on backstands for weld removal or feed-thru style flat finishers for finishing sheets or coils; narrow belts are suitable for backstands or file tools to access right-angle corners for finishing. Key applications include centerless and cylindrical grinding, descaling, finishing, flat finishing, gate removal, high-pressure grinding, intermediate finishing, mill scale removal, parting line removal, plate grinding, shaping, and sheet grinding.
