The 3M™ Cloth Belt 577F measures 3" x 132" with 120 grit alumina zirconium abrasive, designed for use on aluminum, mild steel, stainless steel, and other exotic metal alloys for dimensioning parts, deburring, blending, and finishing castings and forgings. The belt features a grinding aid to reduce running temperatures on heat-sensitive alloys such as stainless steel, nickel alloys, and cobalt alloys, while the abrasive is resin-bonded to the backing to maintain durability under high heat and pressure. Alumina zirconia, a synthetic mineral developed for heavy stock removal and high-pressure grinding, fractures frequently to produce sharp points and deliver a faster cut rate compared to aluminum oxide. The abrasive belts are available in various widths and lengths to accommodate different metalworking applications and fit a wide range of industrial belt sanders. Wider belts are used with wide belt sanders for flat finishing tasks such as smoothing rough cut edges of metal sheets or adding a grain pattern to stainless steel sheets. Medium-width belts are suited for backstand weld removal or feed-thru style flat finishing to impart a finish on sheets or coils. Narrow belts are employed on backstands for grinding and finishing, or on file tools to access right-angle corners for finishing. The belt is suitable for applications including centerless and cylindrical grinding, descaling, finishing, flat finishing, gate removal, high-pressure grinding, intermediate finishing, mill scale removal, parting line removal, plate grinding, shaping, and sheet grinding.
