The 3M™ cloth belt 577F measures 3" x 132" and features a 40 grit alumina zirconium abrasive designed for use on aluminum, mild steel, stainless steel, and other exotic metal alloys for dimensioning parts, deburring, blending, and finishing castings and forgings. It includes a grinding aid to reduce running temperatures when used on heat-sensitive alloys such as stainless steel, nickel alloys, and cobalt alloys, with the abrasive firmly bonded to the cloth backing using resin for durability under high heat and pressure. The alumina zirconia abrasive is a synthetic mineral that fractures frequently to continually produce sharp points, enabling faster cut rates, and is developed for heavy stock removal and high-pressure grinding. These abrasive belts come in various widths and lengths and are compatible with a wide range of belt sanding tools. Wider belts fit wide belt sanders for flat finishing or smoothing rough cut edges of metal sheets, medium-width belts are typically used on backstands or feed-thru style flat finishers for finishing sheets or coils, and narrow belts are used on backstands or file tools to reach right-angle corners for grinding and finishing. Applications include centerless and cylindrical grinding, descaling, flat finishing, gate removal, intermediate finishing, mill scale removal, parting line removal, plate grinding, shaping, and sheet grinding.
