The 3M™ cloth belt 577F measures 37" x 75" and features a 100 grit alumina zirconium abrasive grain designed for increased cutting efficiency compared to aluminum oxide belts. It is backed with a heavy, water-resistant polyester backing that withstands high-pressure applications and edge work, supporting both wet and dry operations. This belt is recommended for use on aluminum, mild steel, stainless steel, and other exotic metal alloys for dimensioning parts, deburring, blending, and finishing castings and forgings. To protect heat-sensitive alloys such as stainless steel, nickel alloys, and cobalt alloys, the belt includes a grinding aid that reduces running temperatures. The abrasive is firmly bonded to the backing with resin to maintain durability under high heat and pressure. Alumina zirconia repeatedly fractures to produce sharp points, enabling a faster cut rate and is specifically developed for heavy stock removal and high-pressure grinding. The belts come in various widths and lengths suited for different belt sanding tools and metalworking applications; wider belts are used with wide belt sanders for flat finishing and smoothing rough-cut edges or adding grain patterns on stainless steel sheets, medium widths are typically used on backstands or feed-thru flat finishers for weld removal and finishing sheets or coils, while narrow belts are used on backstands or file tools to access right angle corners. Applications include descaling, flat finishing, high-pressure grinding, intermediate finishing, mill scale removal, plate grinding, sheet grinding, and slab grinding, serving industries such as builders hardware, medical instruments, and metal fabrication.
