The 3M™ Cloth Belt 577F measures 8 inches by 107 inches and features a 60-grit alumina zirconium abrasive designed for use on aluminum, mild steel, stainless steel, and other exotic metal alloys for dimensioning parts, deburring, blending, and finishing castings and forgings. To protect heat-sensitive alloys such as stainless steel, nickel alloys, and cobalt alloys, the belt incorporates a grinding aid that reduces running temperatures. The abrasive is resin-bonded to the cloth backing to maintain durability under high heat and pressure. Alumina zirconia frequently fractures to continually produce sharp points, delivering a faster cut rate than aluminum oxide. This synthetic mineral is developed for heavy stock removal and high-pressure grinding. Abrasive belts come in various widths and lengths for different belt sanding tools and metalworking applications, with wider belts used on wide belt sanders for flat finishing and smoothing rough-cut metal edges, medium-width belts on backstands or feed-thru flat finishers for weld removal and finishing sheets or coils, and narrow belts on backstands or file tools for grinding, finishing, and accessing right-angle corners. Typical applications include centerless and cylindrical grinding, descaling, finishing, flat finishing, gate removal, high-pressure grinding, intermediate finishing, mill scale removal, parting line removal, plate grinding, shaping, and sheet grinding.
