The 3M™ Cloth Belt 577F measures 2 inches by 132 inches with a 36 grit alumina zirconium abrasive, recommended for use on aluminum, mild steel, stainless steel, and other exotic metal alloys for dimensioning parts, deburring, blending, and finishing castings and forgings. The belt includes a grinding aid to reduce running temperatures, protecting heat-sensitive alloys such as stainless steel, nickel, and cobalt alloys, while the abrasive is resin-bonded to the cloth backing to maintain durability under high heat and pressure. Alumina zirconia, a synthetic mineral that fractures frequently to produce sharp points, provides a faster cut rate than aluminum oxide and is developed for heavy stock removal and high-pressure grinding. These cloth belts come in various widths and lengths to suit a variety of industrial belt sanders and metalworking applications; wider belts fit wide belt sanders for flat finishing and smoothing rough metal sheet edges, medium-width belts are suitable for backstands to remove welds or feed-thru style flat finishers for imparting finishes on sheets or coils, and narrow belts are used on backstands or file tools for grinding and finishing in tight corners. Applications include centerless and cylindrical grinding, descaling, flat finishing, gate removal, high-pressure grinding, intermediate finishing, mill scale removal, parting line removal, plate grinding, shaping, and sheet grinding, serving industries such as builders hardware, medical instruments, metal fabrication, metal implants, plating and polishing, plumbing fixtures, and turbine engines.
