The 3M™ cloth belt 577F measures 6 inches by 132 inches and features 40 grit alumina zirconium abrasive, designed for use on aluminum, mild steel, stainless steel, and other exotic metal alloys for dimensioning parts, deburring, blending, and finishing castings and forgings. It includes a grinding aid that reduces running temperatures to protect heat-sensitive alloys such as stainless steel, nickel alloys, and cobalt alloys. The abrasive is resin-bonded to the cloth backing to maintain durability under high heat and pressure. Alumina zirconia is a synthetic mineral that fractures frequently to continuously produce sharp points, delivering a faster cut rate than aluminum oxide. Developed for heavy stock removal and high-pressure grinding, this belt is available in various widths and lengths to fit a wide range of industrial belt sanders. Wider belts are suitable for wide belt sanders used in flat finishing and smoothing rough cut edges of metal sheets or adding grain patterns to stainless steel sheets. Medium-width belts are generally used on backstands for weld removal or on feed-thru style flat finishers for finishing sheets or coils, while narrow belts are employed on backstands for grinding and finishing or on file tools to access right angle corners. Typical applications include centerless and cylindrical grinding, descaling, finishing, flat finishing, gate removal, high-pressure grinding, intermediate finishing, mill scale removal, parting line removal, plate grinding, shaping, and sheet grinding.
