The 3M™ Cloth Belt 577F measures 3" x 132" and features 60 grit alumina zirconium abrasive, specifically designed for use on aluminum, mild steel, stainless steel, and other exotic metal alloys for dimensioning parts, deburring, blending, and finishing castings and forgings. To protect heat-sensitive alloys such as stainless steel, nickel alloys, and cobalt alloys, the belt incorporates a grinding aid that reduces running temperatures. The abrasive is firmly bonded to the cloth backing with resin to maintain durability under high heat and pressure. Alumina zirconia fractures frequently, producing continuous sharp points that deliver a faster cut rate than aluminum oxide. This synthetic mineral was developed for heavy stock removal and high-pressure grinding. The abrasive belts come in various widths and lengths for use on different belt sanding tools suited to many metalworking applications. Wider belts are used on wide belt sanders for flat finishing to smooth rough-cut edges of metal sheets or add a grain pattern to stainless steel sheets. Medium-width belts are generally applied on backstands for weld removal or on feed-thru style flat finishers for imparting a finish on sheets or coils. Narrow belts are used on backstands for grinding and finishing or on file tools to access right angle corners. The belts are suitable for applications such as centerless and cylindrical grinding, descaling, finishing, flat finishing, gate removal, high-pressure grinding, intermediate finishing, mill scale removal, parting line removal, plate grinding, shaping, and sheet grinding. They serve industries including builders hardware, medical instruments, metal fabrication, metal implants, plating and polishing, plumbing fixtures, and turbine engines.
