The 3M™ Cloth Belt 577F measures 3 inches by 18 inches and features a 40 grit alumina zirconium abrasive designed for use on aluminum, mild steel, stainless steel, and other exotic metal alloys for dimensioning parts, deburring, blending, and finishing castings and forgings. It includes a grinding aid to reduce running temperatures, protecting heat-sensitive alloys such as stainless steel, nickel, and cobalt alloys. The abrasive is resin-bonded to the cloth backing, ensuring durability under high heat and pressure. Alumina zirconium is a synthetic mineral developed for heavy stock removal and high-pressure grinding, continuously fracturing to produce sharp points for a faster cut rate than aluminum oxide. The belt is compatible with various belt sanding tools, with different widths serving distinct functions: wider belts are suitable for wide belt sanders used in flat finishing and smoothing rough-cut edges or adding grain patterns to stainless steel sheets, medium-width belts are typically employed on backstands for weld removal or feed-thru flat finishers for sheet or coil finishing, and narrow belts are used on backstands or file tools for grinding, finishing, or accessing right-angle corners.
