The 3M™ Cloth Belt 577F measures 8" x 60" with a 50 grit alumina zirconium abrasive, recommended for use on aluminum, mild steel, stainless steel, and other exotic metal alloys for dimensioning parts, deburring, blending, and finishing castings and forgings. It features a grinding aid to reduce running temperatures on heat-sensitive alloys such as stainless steel, nickel, and cobalt alloys, and the abrasive is bonded to the cloth backing with resin to maintain durability under high heat and pressure. The alumina zirconia abrasive fractures frequently to continually produce sharp points, providing a faster cut rate than aluminum oxide; it is a synthetic mineral developed for heavy stock removal and high-pressure grinding. The belts come in various widths and lengths and are compatible with a range of belt sanding tools for metalworking applications. Wider belts fit wide belt sanders for flat finishing and smoothing rough metal edges or adding grain patterns to stainless steel sheets, medium widths are used on backstands or feed-thru style flat finishers for weld removal and finishing sheets or coils, and narrow belts suit backstands or file tools for grinding, finishing, and accessing right-angle corners. Suitable applications include centerless and cylindrical grinding, descaling, finishing, flat finishing, gate removal, high-pressure grinding, intermediate finishing, mill scale removal, parting line removal, plate grinding, shaping, and sheet grinding.
