3M™ cloth belt 577F measures 1/2" x 18" and features alumina zirconia abrasive grain for increased cutting efficiency compared to aluminum oxide belts. It is backed with a heavy, water-resistant polyester backing designed to withstand high-pressure applications and edge work, supporting both wet and dry operations. This belt is recommended for use on aluminum, mild steel, stainless steel, and other exotic metal alloys for dimensioning parts, deburring, blending, and finishing castings and forgings. To protect heat-sensitive alloys such as stainless steel, nickel alloys, and cobalt alloys, the belt includes a grinding aid that reduces running temperatures. The abrasive is firmly bonded to the backing with resin to maintain durability under high heat and pressure. Alumina zirconia, a synthetic mineral developed for heavy stock removal and high-pressure grinding, continually fractures to produce sharp points and deliver a faster cut rate than aluminum oxide. The belt is available in a variety of widths and lengths to fit different belt sanding tools used across multiple metalworking applications. Wider belts are suited for wide belt sanders to smooth rough cut edges or add grain patterns to stainless steel sheets, medium-width belts are typically used on backstands or feed-thru style flat finishers for weld removal or finishing sheets and coils, and narrow belts are used on backstands or file tools to reach right-angle corners for finishing. Applications include blending, coating removal, deburring, and high-pressure grinding.
