The 3M™ cloth belt 577F measures 4" x 132" and features 24 grit alumina zirconium abrasive, recommended for use on aluminum, mild steel, stainless steel, and other exotic metal alloys for dimensioning parts, deburring, blending, and finishing castings and forgings. The belt incorporates a grinding aid to reduce running temperatures, protecting heat-sensitive alloys such as stainless steel, nickel alloys, and cobalt alloys. The abrasive is firmly resin-bonded to the backing to maintain durability under high heat and pressure. Alumina zirconia, a synthetic mineral, fractures frequently to continually produce sharp points, enabling a faster cut rate than aluminum oxide, and was developed specifically for heavy stock removal and high-pressure grinding. The belts are available in various widths and lengths, suitable for many belt sanding tools across diverse metalworking applications. Wide belts are used with wide belt sanders for flat finishing and smoothing rough-cut edges or adding grain patterns to stainless steel sheets. Medium-width belts typically run on backstands for weld removal or feed-thru style flat finishers to impart finishes on sheets or coils, while narrow belts are used on backstands for grinding and finishing or on file tools for accessing right-angle corners. Applications include centerless and cylindrical grinding, descaling, finishing, flat finishing, gate removal, high-pressure grinding, intermediate finishing, mill scale removal, parting line removal, plate grinding, shaping, and sheet grinding.
