The 3M™ Cloth Belt 577F measures 6 inches by 168 inches and features a 36 grit alumina zirconium abrasive, designed for use on aluminum, mild steel, stainless steel, and other exotic metal alloys for dimensioning parts, deburring, blending, and finishing castings and forgings. The belt includes a grinding aid to protect heat-sensitive alloys such as stainless steel, nickel alloys, and cobalt alloys by reducing running temperatures, while the abrasive is firmly bonded to the backing with resin to maintain durability under high heat and pressure. Alumina zirconia, a synthetic mineral, fractures frequently to continuously produce sharp points, delivering a faster cut rate than aluminum oxide, making it suitable for heavy stock removal and high-pressure grinding. The abrasive belts are available in various widths and lengths to fit most industrial belt sanders; wider belts are used for wide belt sanders to smooth rough cut edges and add grain patterns, medium-width belts are used on backstands or feed-thru finishers for weld removal and finishing sheets or coils, and narrow belts are employed on backstands or file tools for grinding and finishing right angle corners. Applications include centerless and cylindrical grinding, descaling, flat finishing, gate removal, intermediate finishing, mill scale removal, parting line removal, shaping, and sheet grinding.
