The 3M™ Cloth Belt 577F, measuring 6" x 132" with 80 grit alumina zirconium abrasive, is designed for use on aluminum, mild steel, stainless steel, and other exotic metal alloys for dimensioning parts, deburring, blending, and finishing castings and forgings. It features a grinding aid to reduce running temperatures, protecting heat-sensitive alloys such as stainless steel, nickel alloys, and cobalt alloys. The abrasive is firmly bonded to the backing with resin to maintain durability under high heat and pressure. Alumina zirconia, a synthetic mineral developed for heavy stock removal and high-pressure grinding, fractures frequently to continually produce sharp points and deliver a faster cut rate than aluminum oxide. The abrasive belts come in various widths and lengths to fit most industrial belt sanders. Wider belts are suited for wide belt sanders used in flat finishing to smooth rough cut edges or add a grain pattern to stainless steel sheets, medium-width belts are generally used on backstands for weld removal or feed-thru style flat finishers, and narrow belts can be used on backstands or file tools for grinding and accessing right-angle corners. Applications include centerless and cylindrical grinding, descaling, finishing, flat finishing, gate removal, high-pressure grinding, intermediate finishing, mill scale removal, parting line removal, plate grinding, shaping, and sheet grinding.
