The 3M™ cloth belt 577F measures 1/2" x 24" and features an alumina zirconium abrasive grain designed for increased cutting efficiency compared to aluminum oxide belts. It is backed with a heavy, water-resistant polyester backing that withstands high-pressure applications and edge work, ensuring long life and supporting both wet and dry operations. The belt is recommended for use on aluminum, mild steel, stainless steel, and other exotic metal alloys for dimensioning parts, deburring, blending, and finishing castings and forgings. A grinding aid on the belt reduces running temperatures to protect heat-sensitive alloys such as stainless steel, nickel alloys, and cobalt alloys. The abrasive is firmly bonded to the backing with resin to maintain durability under high heat and pressure. Alumina zirconia fractures frequently to continuously produce sharp points, delivering a faster cut rate than aluminum oxide; it is a synthetic mineral developed for heavy stock removal and high-pressure grinding. Abrasive belts are available in various widths and lengths for different belt sanding tools and metalworking applications. Wide belts suit wide belt sanders for flat finishing and smoothing rough cut edges or adding grain patterns to stainless steel sheets, medium-width belts are used on backstands for weld removal or feed-thru style flat finishers, while narrow belts are used on backstands or file tools for finishing right-angle corners. Applications include blending, coating removal, deburring, and high-pressure grinding across industries such as builders hardware, medical instruments, metal fabrication, metal implants, plating and polishing, plumbing fixtures, and turbine engines.
