The 3M™ Cloth Belt 577F is a 1/2" x 18" abrasive belt featuring alumina zirconia abrasive grain, which offers increased cutting efficiency compared to aluminum oxide belts. It has a heavy, water-resistant polyester backing that is durable and suitable for high-pressure applications and edge work, supporting both wet and dry operations. The belt is recommended for use on aluminum, mild steel, stainless steel, and other exotic metal alloys for tasks such as dimensioning parts, deburring, blending, and finishing castings and forgings. A grinding aid integrated into the belt helps protect heat-sensitive alloys like stainless steel, nickel, and cobalt alloys by reducing running temperatures. The abrasive is firmly bonded to the backing with resin to ensure durability under high heat and pressure. Alumina zirconia, a synthetic mineral designed for heavy stock removal and high-pressure grinding, frequently fractures to produce sharp points and deliver a faster cut rate than aluminum oxide. The abrasives come in various widths and lengths to fit a range of belt sanding tools and applications, including wide belts for flat finishing and grain pattern addition on metal sheets, medium widths for weld removal and finishing on backstands or feed-thru style finishers, and narrow belts for grinding and finishing in tight corners. Typical applications include blending, coating removal, deburring, and high-pressure grinding, serving industries such as builders hardware, medical instruments, metal fabrication, metal implants, plating and polishing, plumbing fixtures, and turbine engines.
