The 3M™ cloth belt 577F measures 1" x 18" and features alumina zirconia abrasive grain, offering increased cutting efficiency compared to aluminum oxide belts. It has a heavy, water-resistant polyester backing that endures high-pressure applications and edge work, supporting both wet and dry operations. The belt is recommended for use on aluminum, mild steel, stainless steel, and other exotic metal alloys for dimensioning parts, deburring, blending, and finishing castings and forgings. To protect heat-sensitive alloys such as stainless steel, nickel alloys, and cobalt alloys, the belt includes a grinding aid that reduces running temperatures. The abrasive is resin-bonded to the backing to maintain durability under high heat and pressure. Alumina zirconia fractures frequently to produce sharp points, delivering a faster cut rate than aluminum oxide, and was developed for heavy stock removal and high-pressure grinding. Available in various widths and lengths, these abrasive belts fit a range of belt sanding tools used in metalworking applications. Wider belts suit wide belt sanders for flat finishing and smoothing rough edges of metal sheets or adding grain patterns to stainless steel sheets. Medium-width belts are generally used on backstands for weld removal or feed-thru style flat finishers to impart finishes on sheets or coils. Narrow belts function on backstands for grinding and finishing or on file tools to access right-angle corners.
