The 3M™ Cloth Belt 577F measures 3 inches by 18 inches and features 60 grit alumina zirconium abrasive, recommended for use on aluminum, mild steel, stainless steel, and other exotic metal alloys for dimensioning parts, deburring, blending, and finishing castings and forgings. The belt includes a grinding aid to reduce running temperatures, protecting heat-sensitive alloys such as stainless steel, nickel alloys, and cobalt alloys. The abrasive is resin-bonded to the backing to maintain durability under high heat and pressure. Alumina zirconia, a synthetic mineral developed for heavy stock removal and high-pressure grinding, fractures frequently to continually produce sharp points, delivering a faster cut-rate than aluminum oxide. Abrasive belts are available in various widths and lengths to fit multiple industrial belt sanding tools; wider belts are used with wide belt sanders for flat finishing and grain pattern addition, medium-width belts are used on backstands or feed-thru style flat finishers for weld removal or finishing sheets and coils, and narrow belts are used on backstands or file tools for grinding, finishing, and accessing right-angle corners. Applications include setting the grain and creating a straight line brushed finish, primarily serving the metal fabrication industry.
