The 3M™ Cloth Belt 577F measures 4 inches by 132 inches and features 36 grit alumina zirconium abrasive, suitable for use on aluminum, mild steel, stainless steel, and other exotic metal alloys for dimensioning parts, deburring, blending, and finishing castings and forgings. The belt includes a grinding aid to reduce running temperatures, protecting heat-sensitive alloys such as stainless steel, nickel alloys, and cobalt alloys. The abrasive is resin-bonded to the backing to maintain durability under high heat and pressure. Alumina zirconia fractures frequently to continuously produce sharp points, providing a faster cut rate than aluminum oxide. This synthetic mineral is developed for heavy stock removal and high-pressure grinding. The abrasive belts come in various widths and lengths to fit most industrial belt sanders: wider belts are for wide belt sanders used in flat finishing and smoothing rough cut edges of metal sheets or adding grain patterns to stainless steel, medium-width belts are used on backstands for weld removal or feed-thru flat finishers for sheet or coil finishing, and narrow belts are used on backstands or file tools for grinding and finishing right angle corners. Applications include centerless and cylindrical grinding, descaling, finishing, flat finishing, gate removal, high-pressure grinding, intermediate finishing, mill scale removal, parting line removal, plate grinding, shaping, and sheet grinding.
